SOME Tembo Facts

Species

There are two species of elephant: Asian and African. Kenya hosts about 10% (about 36,280 in 2021) of the world’s elephant population!

Tusks

Elephant ivory tusks (their two massive teeth) continue to grow throughout their lives.

Intelligence

Elephants are super-intelligent creatures! They communicate through trumpets and can feel vibrations from the ground.

This Festival is an innovative sustainability mechanism to champion elephant conservation in Kenya. It offers individuals and organisations an opportunity to support conservation effort.

Magical Kenya Tembo Naming Festival is a destination initiative aimed at positioning Kenya as global leader in sustainability while raising funds for conservation and human-wildlife co-existence.

The second edition of Magical Kenya Tembo Naming Festival is scheduled

for December 2022.

FESTIVAL AMBASSADOR

Edward Norton

Renowned actor, writer, director and producer Edward Norton, joined the cause as the Tembo Naming Festival’s official brand ambassador.

Aside from being an award-winning actor, Norton has been a committed social and environmental activist for many years. He was named a Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity by the United Nations in 2010 and proudly lends his voice and support for the Tembo Naming Festival and its mission.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Regrettably, our planet’s elephants are in trouble. Elephants are killed by poachers for their beautiful ivory tusks and this is threatening to wipe out their entire species. Elephant populations in have suffered tremendous losses due to this but, there’s hope! By burning accumulated ivory stockpiles over the decades, the Kenyan government made a bold statement to the world.
To take a stand against poaching, the Kenyan government destroyed tonnes of poached ivory

5 tonnes in 1989
12 tonnes in 2011
15 TONNES IN 2015
105 tonnes in 2016

Kenya’s Conservation and Management Strategy for Elephants calls for a continuous effort to secure a safe and lasting future for this widely-celebrated national treasure.

<strong>FESTIVAL FOR A CAUSE</strong>

In October 2021, efforts to conserve elephants bore fruit. The Magical Kenya Tembo Naming Festival (MKTNF) was born. The tourism and wildlife conservation event celebrates and champions elephant conservation in Kenya by giving local and international communities an opportunity to ‘adopt’ and name elephants. The cause further intends to support the nature reserve through:

Water Provision
New Technology For Wildlife Management

OPERATION AMBOSELI

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s Premium parks and a must-visit tourist destination, making it the ideal launch point for our campaign.
The renowned park prides itself for playing host to the longest-running study of wild elephants ever undertaken globally. The majesty of Amboseli’s celebrity elephants is underscored by their calm personalities.

Only about 40% of elephants around Amboseli are known
to use Amboseli National Park during dry seasons.

It is therefore essential that we salvage some of the less disturbed buffer zones adjacent to the park, to create more space for our elephants.

<strong>A PLACE TO CALL HOME</strong>

The MKTNF aims to raise funds to secure these important areas for elephants to live safely and to promote human-elephant co-existence. It is going to cost about KES 100,000,000 over 860,000 USD to secure this space and ensure sustainable conservation in the Amboseli
ecosystem
